In ShortAll I ever wanted my whole life was to be a good wife and a good mother, and I thought this would cost me that. I was also raised to believe it would send me to hell, and that one I carried by myself. I am writing this for the woman sitting where I sat.
My husband told me what he wanted on a night that was not special in any way. We had been together since we were sixteen. We had four boys. We had a life in Missouri. And he told me he wanted to watch me with another man.
I did not say yes that night. I did not say no either.
What I did was lie there afterward with my eyes open, running through everything it could possibly mean. If you are a wife and he has said it to you, you already know exactly what that hour feels like.
I want to tell you what I was actually afraid of. Not the version I could have said out loud at the time.
I am writing them out one at a time because that is the only way to put them on a page. They did not arrive that way. They came all at once and they were all the same size.
All I ever wanted was to be a good wife and a good mother
That is not a line. That is the whole truth of me and it has been since I was a girl. I wanted a husband I was crazy about and a big family and a house full of noise. I got all of it.
So when he asked, the first thing that moved in me was not curiosity. It was the feeling that I was being asked to trade the only thing I had ever wanted to be.
I was afraid it would make me a bad wife and a bad mother
Not in some abstract way. I mean I was afraid I would become one, and that the boys would somehow end up paying for it, and that I would have thrown away the only thing I ever wanted to be in exchange for a night.
That fear sat right next to the one about hell and neither of them was bigger. They took turns.
Ten years later I am still a wife first and a mother first. That has not moved an inch, and it is the part I am surest of out of everything on this page.
He must be bored with me
This was the first thought and it arrived before he finished the sentence.
Twenty two years in and he wants to watch someone else. What else could that mean except that I had run out. That he had looked at me and found the edges of what I was going to be.
It took me a long time to understand that it was the opposite of that. He did not want less of me. He wanted to see what I look like when someone else works out what he gets to come home to. There is a whole thing going on in him that has nothing to do with me being insufficient.
He was not bored. He was proud, in a way I did not have a word for yet.
And the other half of it: will he still look at me the same
This one I never said out loud to him for a long time, because saying it felt like accusing him of something he had not done yet.
Men say they want it. Then it happens. And some part of me was sure that the second it was real, something would go quiet behind his eyes and I would have lost him by giving him exactly what he asked for.
I was wrong, and I want to be careful about how I say why, because it is not a promise I can make for your marriage.
He looks at me more now, not less. But it was not automatic and it was not free. We talked about it afterward, every time, for a long time. The looking at me more came from the talking, not from the act.
I was afraid I would go to hell
I was raised to believe there is a hell, and that this is the kind of thing that sends you there.
I feared it for a long time. What I can tell you from where I am now is that I know the things I did not know then, and I am still here, and so is my marriage.
I did not become someone else at all. I became more of who I already was. The woman who likes being looked at, who likes a man who is sure of himself, who is a little naughty and always was. She was already in there. She had just never been given anything to do.
I am still a wife first and a mother first. Ten years in, that has not moved an inch.
What if I like it
Nobody warns you about this one, because nobody admits it is a fear.
Somewhere in that first hour I understood that the dangerous outcome was not hating it. It was loving it. Hating it would have been simple. We would have stopped and gone back to our life.
Loving it meant I would have to know something new about myself and then decide what to do with it.
I did love it. I love it still. And the knowing turned out to be the good part, not the dangerous part, though I will not pretend I arrived there in a week.
The real reason I never asked first
People assume I must have wanted this quietly for years and been too afraid to say it.
I did not. It was not a thought I had.
I never fantasized about another man. My husband was my husband. The only place any of this lived for me was in the talk we had in our own bedroom, and in what we shared anonymously online, and both of those were ours. It was something we did together. It was not a want I was carrying around by myself.
He had carried the real thing for decades before he said it out loud. I got to find out who I was because he finally did.
It was scary. For both of us.
I am not going to tell you it was easy, because that would make everything else on this page worth less.
It was scary. For both of us. There were nights that were harder than we expected and conversations that went past three in the morning. There were things we had to put back on the shelf and come back to later. Our rules got rewritten more than once because the first version was written by two people who did not know anything yet.
The part that made it work was not being brave. It was that neither of us was ever allowed to pretend.
Our marriage was not broken
Our marriage was not broken when we started this.
We are a Hotwife couple because we were already happy, not the other way around. If something had been wrong between us, this would have found it and made it worse. It is very good at finding what is already there.
So the question is not whether you are the kind of woman who does this. The question is whether the two of you are already solid, today, before any of it.
If you are not, that is your conversation tonight, and it has nothing to do with the thing he asked for.
If you are sitting where I sat
You do not have to decide tonight. I did not.
You are allowed to ask him why. Not as an accusation, just the actual question, because his answer is almost certainly not the one you are dreading.
You are allowed to be curious and terrified in the same hour. I was.
And you are allowed to want it. That one took me the longest.
Ten years later my husband and I are closer than we were at twenty two years in, and we built our life so we could spend as much of it together as we can. We work together. We train together. We go everywhere together.
We are one. That is what this was always protecting, and it is what it made bigger.
The long version of all of it, from 1994 to now, is in Becoming Happy Hotwife. What happened after I said yes is here. And if the fear you are carrying is his, not yours, I wrote that one too.
