In ShortThe fear is not that you will hate it. It is that you will love it. I did. The appetite grew, and that is the part nobody prepares a wife for. Here is what it actually looks like ten years in.

Everybody warns a wife that she might hate it. Nobody warns her about the other one.

I loved it. I love it still, more than I did at the start, and that turned out to be the part I had to learn to carry.

The first thing I felt afterward was not what I expected

It was not guilt about him. He was right there. He wanted it, he watched, we talked about it for hours after.

It was something closer to being found out. I had just learned something about myself in front of the person who knows me best, and I could not put it back.

That feeling faded. It took longer than I wanted it to.

Nobody tells you the appetite grows

I started this not knowing what I liked. I did not have a type I was chasing or a thing I was looking for. I had a husband who asked and a curiosity I had never been allowed to have.

Ten years later I know exactly what I want. I know what I will not settle for. I learned something about my own body that I had no way of knowing before, and now it is a requirement rather than a surprise.

That is a real change in a woman and no one prepares you for it. You do not go back to being the person who was nervous about the first time.

What happens when he gets quiet and you do not want to stop

This is the one I have not seen written anywhere, so I will write it.

There are seasons where my husband wonders whether he wants to keep sharing me. He asks me what I think. I tell him the truth, which is that I do not want to stop.

That is a hard sentence to say to a man you love. It is harder to say it without dressing it up.

We are still in that conversation. I am not writing you from the far side of it with a lesson attached.

Why I say it anyway

Because the alternative is managing him, and we do not do that.

If I softened it, he would be deciding about a version of me that does not exist. He would be weighing a wife who could take it or leave it, and that is not who he is married to. The only thing that has ever worked for us is neither of us being allowed to pretend.

So I say the true thing and we sit in it together, and so far every time we have come out the other side closer than we went in.

Liking it is not the same as needing it

I would stop. If he told me he was done, I would be done.

Not out of obligation and not because I owe him for the years. Because he is the thing, and everything out there has only ever been something we do. A night cannot compete with a life, and I have had enough of both to know the difference.

Wanting something badly and being willing to lose it for the right reason can live in the same woman. That took me years.

If you are somewhere in this

You are allowed to have liked it.

You are allowed to have liked it more than he expected, and more than you expected, and to have gone quiet about it because you did not know what it meant.

Tell him. Not the softened version. He is not as breakable as the sentence he was raised with suggests, and if you have built something real, it will hold what you actually are.

My husband and I built our life around being together as much as we can. We work together. We train together. We go everywhere together. Nothing I have ever wanted out there has touched that.

We are one.

The whole story is in Becoming Happy Hotwife. If you are earlier than this, start with what I was afraid of when he asked.
