In ShortRoughly a third of women have fantasized about this. You are one of a third, not one of a kind. Bringing it up yourself is harder than it should be, and that is societal pressure sitting on both of you, not something wrong with either of you.
The most-cited survey on sexual fantasy in the United States found that roughly a third of women have fantasized about their partner being with someone else, or about being with someone else while he watched.
One in three.
Nobody ever quotes that one. The number people quote is the men's, and it gets repeated so often that this whole thing reads like something that happens to wives instead of something wives want.
I want it. I have wanted it for a long time. And I am writing this for the woman who wants it and has not said so.
You were raised into a sentence
A good wife does not want this.
Nobody sat you down and said it. You absorbed it, the way I did, from church and television and your mother and a thousand small comments about other women. By the time you were old enough to want anything, that sentence was already in you.
It is why I never asked, and not in the way you would think. It was not that I wanted it and was too afraid to say so. I never thought about it at all. My husband was my husband and I did not fantasize about other men. The only place any of it lived was in the talk we had in our own bedroom and in what we shared anonymously online, and both of those were something we did together.
So there was nothing in me to bring up. That is how completely a sentence like that works. It does not just stop you saying the thing. It stops you thinking it.
I needed someone to tell me the door was real. My husband asked me, and that is the only reason I found out who I was.
He was raised into a sentence too
A real man does not share.
He did not pick that one either. It was handed to him younger than you got yours, and it is enforced harder, with a word built specifically to punish him for it.
This matters for you, because it is the thing standing between you and the conversation you want to have.
The part that is hard, and I am not going to soften it
When he brings it up, he is offering you a fantasy he has carried.
When you bring it up, it can land on him as a verdict.
Same marriage, same lifestyle, completely different weight, and it is not fair. I watch a version of it in my own house. My husband asked for this. He has wanted it for decades. He is all in when we are talking about it. And when I start actually setting something up, he gets quiet.
Reality is different from fantasy for him, every time, and he is a man who went looking for this. So I am not going to stand here and tell you that if you just communicate well it will go smoothly.
What that quiet actually is
It is not him being fragile and it is not him changing his mind.
It is the sentence he was raised into, showing up at the exact moment the thing becomes real. He is not defending himself from you. He is managing something that got installed in him before he had any say in it.
Knowing that changed how I handle those moments. I stopped reading his quiet as a no.
And it will not always be like this
The asymmetry is not a law of nature. It is ego and stereotype and mostly plain societal pressure, and all three of those move.
That is the entire reason this site exists. Not so that more women become Hotwives, but so that a wife can say what she wants to her husband without it landing on him as a failure, in our lifetime.
So what would I actually do
Not a script. This is what I would do if I were you.
I would start where it is already safe. If you and your husband talk in bed, say it there first, as a fantasy, because that is where it was allowed to be a fantasy for us. It was talk in the dark long before it was anything else.
I would not lead with wanting another man. I would lead with what it does to me when he wants me, because that is true and it is the part he can hear.
I would give him the number. A third of women. He has probably never been told that, and it reframes you from strange to ordinary in one sentence.
I would let him sit with it. Mine needed years, and he was the one who brought it up.
And I would watch for the quiet rather than being hurt by it.
One honest warning
Wife led is harder. I am not going to pretend otherwise on a site built on not pretending.
If your marriage is already thin, this will find it. It is very good at finding what is already there. We did this because we were already happy, not to fix anything, and the couples I watch it work for are the same.
So ask yourself whether the two of you are solid today, before any of it. If you are not, that is the conversation, and it has nothing to do with what you want.
You are allowed to want it
That is the whole reason I wrote this page.
You are not broken and you are not greedy and you are not a bad wife. You are one of a third, and the only thing separating you from the ones who say it out loud is a sentence somebody handed you before you could argue.
My husband and I built our life around being together as much as we can. We work together. We train together. We go everywhere together. None of what we do out there has ever competed with that.
We are one. That is what this protects, and it is what it made bigger.
The long version is in Becoming Happy Hotwife. If he is the one who asked and you are the one deciding, I wrote that one too.
