Keyholder: The One Who Wears the Key

A Keyholder is the partner who holds the key to the other partner's chastity device and controls when it comes off. Where the word comes from

Unlike compersion, nobody had to invent this word. Keyholder is ordinary English. It has always meant the trusted person who holds the keys to a building, the employee who opens the shop in the morning, the one who can be counted on with the lock. The lifestyle did not change the meaning. It just changed what the lock is guarding. That is part of why I like the word so much. It is not clinical and it is not crude. It is a word about trust, because that is what holding someone's key actually is.

The history of the thing being locked is messier, and I want to be honest about it. The story everyone knows, the medieval knight locking his wife in an iron belt before riding off to the Crusades, is folklore. Historians who have dug into it, most thoroughly Albrecht Classen in his book The Medieval Chastity Belt: A Myth-Making Process, found no evidence that metal chastity belts were ever actually used in the Middle Ages. The earliest known drawing of one appears in a 1405 military manuscript called Bellifortis, tucked in among fanciful inventions and outright jokes, and later Renaissance engravings treated the belt as satire, usually with the wife's lover already holding a copy of the key. Even the British Museum concluded that most of the “antique” belts in collections were made in the 18th and 19th centuries as curiosities and gags. So when someone tells you chastity play is a medieval tradition, smile. It is a much younger game than that.

The real history is modern. Most of today's device designs trace back to work done in the 1950s, and the plastic cage era that made male chastity an everyday reality for ordinary couples began in the 2000s, when a small Las Vegas company called A.L.
